Income Tax Preparation Assistance

With April 15th fast approaching, we will probably be getting more and more questions from patrons about income tax preparation assistance. Avondale and Smithfield are the only BPL sites where assistance is being offered this year. Some other websites that will be useful to patrons seeking help with their taxes are those of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the Alabama Department of Revenue (ADOR). The AARP, which is sponsoring the assistance at Avondale, is also offering tax counseling at several other locations throughout the Birmingham metro area. The IRS site has a list of Taxpayer Assistance Centers in Alabama that includes addresses, phone numbers, and hours of operation:

The website of the Alabama Department of Revenue has contact information for its nine Taxpayer Service Centers throughout the state. The local center, which used to be on 3rd Avenue in downtown Birmingham, has moved to Valleydale Road in Hoover and has been renamed the Jefferson/Shelby Center:
