There's a flap in the publishing world right now that may or may not have hit your personal radar, but since we're tangentially connected to the book business you may be interested to know. Amazon and MacMillan (a major publishing house) are currently in a dispute over the price of ebooks and as a result Amazon, late Friday night and with no prior warning, pulled every MacMillan book, whether print or electronic format, from their catalog. You can look the books up, but you can't buy them.
The inimitable John Scalzi (Old Man's War and Zoe's Tale, among others) has been covering the fracas on his blog. For further information, read A Quick Note on eBook Pricing to see how it started and a follow-up summary of the weekend play-by-play in which he concludes that, right or wrong, MacMillan is behaving like a business run by adults and Amazon is not. (Warning: some adult language.)
I'm posting this here today because Mr. Scalzi is also asking for A Call for Support for authors whose livelihoods are being impacted by petulant corporate foot-stomping. It's worth a read and it'll make you glad we work for the public instead of these (ahem) Titans of Industry.
