Gift Store at BCRI Offers December Discounts


Birmingham, Alabama—December is a month of holiday sales and special discounts and the Gift Store at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) wants to get into the spirit of the season. Through December 31, the store will feature 15% discounts to employees of any businesses and schools in the greater Birmingham metro area. Employees can register for one of two $100 shopping sprees in the Gift Store that will be given away on Saturday, December 15. All visitors to the Institute will be able to take advantage of the 15% discount on everything (excluding clearance items) during Customer Appreciation Days on December 14 and 15.

More than 140,000 visitors make their way to BCRI each year. Practically all of them pass through the BCRI Gift Store. To create a shopping experience in line with the Institute’s mission, BCRI has partnered with Philadelphia-based AA Museum Shops LLC to operate the Gift Store. “December is a relatively quite time at the Institute,” stated BCRI Gift Store Manager Carolyn Cunningham. “We wanted to offer the discounts and Customer Appreciation Days in order to thank the Birmingham community for a wonderful year, encourage new visitors to the store and increase traffic to the facility.”

AA Museum Shops, a BDJ Ventures Company, is an African American owned firm whose goal is to create and manage African American museum gift shops that are exciting and memorable destinations that help to extend and enhance the visitor's learning experience. AA Museum Shops was selected by the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, Maryland partially due to previous success at The National Great Blacks In Wax Museum also located in that city. The Great Blacks In Wax Museum gift shop transformation, just 3 years old, has resulted in rave reviews from patrons and a 150% increase in gift shop revenues.

BCRI is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Gift Store has the same hours of operation and is accessible directly from Sixteenth Street North.
